چکیده

In order to efficiently use the future generations of supercomputers, fault tolerance and power consumption are two of the prime challenges anticipated by the High Performance Computing (HPC) community. Checkpoint/Restart (CR) has been and still is the most widely used technique to deal with hard failures. Application-level CR is the most effective CR technique in terms of overhead efficiency but it takes a lot of implementation effort. This work presents the implementation of our C++ based library CRAFT (Checkpoint-Restart and Automatic Fault Tolerance), which serves two purposes. First, it provides an extendable library that significantly eases the implementation of application-level checkpointing. The most basic and frequently used checkpoint data types are already part of CRAFT and can be directly used out of the box. The library can be easily extended to add more data types. As means of overhead reduction, the library offers a build-in asynchronous checkpointing mechanism and also supports the Scalable Checkpoint/Restart (SCR) library for node level checkpointing. Second, CRAFT provides an easier interface for User-Level Failure Mitigation (ULFM) based dynamic process recovery, which significantly reduces the complexity and effort of failure detection and communication recovery mechanism. By utilizing both functionalities together, applications can write application-level checkpoints and recover dynamically from process failures with very limited programming effort. This work presents the design and use of our library in detail. The associated overheads are thoroughly analyzed using several

High-Level Fault Tolerance in Distributed Programs

We have been developing high-level checkpoint and restart methods for Dome (Distributed Object Migration Environment), a C++ library of data-parallel objects that are automatically distributed using PVM. There are several levels of programming abstraction at which fault tolerance mechanisms can be designed: high-level, where the checkpoint and restart are built into our C++ objects, but the pro...

A Checkpoint and Restart Service Specification for Open MPI

HPC systems are growing in both complexity and size, increasing the opportunity for system failures. Checkpoint and restart techniques are one of many fault tolerance techniques developed for such adverse runtime conditions. Because of the variety of available approaches for checkpoint and restart, HPC system libraries, such as MPI, seeking to incorporate these techniques would benefit greatly ...

A Checkpoint/Restart Scheme for CUDA Programs with Complex Computation States

Checkpoint/restart has been an effective mechanism to achieve fault tolerance for many long-running scientific applications. The common approach is to save computation states in memory and secondary storage for execution resumption. However, as the GPU plays a much bigger role in high performance computing, there is no effective checkpoint/restart scheme yet due to the difficulty of the GPU com...

Checkpoint/Restart of Virtual Machines Based on Xen

System level virtualization provides several advantages: (i) customization is eased since virtual machines may be based on different systems; (ii) virtual machines are isolated from hardware, subsequently applications are isolated via the virtual machines; (iii) basic fault tolerance mechanisms – pro-active fault tolerance through virtual machine migration and virtual machine snapshot/restore; ...

Linux-CR: Transparent Application Checkpoint-Restart in Linux

Application checkpoint-restart is the ability to save the state of a running application so that it can later resume its execution from the time of the checkpoint. Application checkpoint-restart provides many useful benefits including fault recovery, advanced resources sharing, dynamic load balancing and improved service availability. For several years the Linux kernel has been gaining the nece...
